What does a short daily logic puzzle do for you?

By , who makes Tablewit · Updated

A logic puzzle of a few minutes a day gives you a real break, a stretch of calm focus with a clear finish, and steady practice at careful step by step reasoning. It's a pleasant habit, not a cure: studies of brain training find that people get better at the puzzles they practice, while the evidence that it lifts memory or intelligence in general is weak, so the best reason to play is that it feels good

Does a daily puzzle make you smarter?

Probably not in a general way, and it's worth being honest about it. A large review of brain training research (Simons and colleagues, 2016, in Psychological Science in the Public Interest) found good evidence that practice improves the trained tasks and closely related ones, and little evidence that it carries over to everyday thinking. What you do get is better at deduction puzzles themselves, you learn to spot patterns faster, and that feeling of progress is real

Why is a short puzzle a good break?

A break works best when it pulls your attention somewhere else for a little while and then lets you go. A review of micro-breaks at work (Albulescu and colleagues, 2022, in PLOS ONE) found that short breaks of up to ten minutes raised energy and lowered fatigue. A small logic puzzle fits that shape well: it asks for all of your attention, it takes a few minutes, and it ends. Unlike a feed, it has a last move, so it's easy to put the phone down afterwards

Why once a day instead of a long session?

How do you make it a habit?

  1. Tie it to something you already do, like the first coffee, the commute or the wait before a meeting
  2. Keep it short, one or two puzzles is enough on a busy day
  3. Let the streak be gentle, a missed day is part of the habit, not the end of it
  4. Stop when you're done, the pleasure is in finishing, not in playing more

How does Tablewit help?

Tablewit was made for exactly this kind of break. It sets out six short logic puzzles every day, Stars, Halves, Lanterns, Plots, Camp and Stones, the same for everyone and free with no ads. When they're done the day is done, and the app says see you tomorrow instead of offering more. The streak counts any puzzle you solve, every seven days your mascot saves a treat that covers a missed day on its own, and a day you miss can still be won back by playing yesterday's puzzles. There's also a 5×5 Mini you can solve right on your Home Screen widget, for the shortest breaks
